Temporary installation in Black Rock City, NV

Cup Commune was a temporary installation created for Burning Man in 2025. Three unique cup outposts were placed across the city and playa, inviting participants to open them and select a cup to take home. In total we gifted more than 500 cups—handmade by our crew, other Seattle potters, or purchased from Goodwill.

I created 106 cups

This series of cups was inspired by Burning Man: the silly phrases, fire, atmosphere, dust, emotions, and the art. Each set explored different shapes, handles, clays, glazes, and decoration techniques. It taught me so much and my throwing dramatically improved with this focused practice.

Above: My favorite mug of all. The shape was inspired by a vintage volcano mug I encountered in a coffee shop, while the design was inspired by the 2022 Empyrean Temple.

Burners found cups in outposts throughout the city

The dollhouse outpost build was lead by Jason Kuster. I supported him with design, painting, and construction offsite. Additionally I sewed the tablecloth, containing a hidden zipper to access a door in the table for extra mug storage.

Two other outposts were created by Jake Schemm and Rachael Hunter.
